Pharmaceutical name: Radix Morindae Officinalis
Latin botanical name: Morinda officinalis How; Family:rubiacease
Pron. in Japanese: hagekiten
Pron. in Korean: p'agukch'on
Pron. in Cantonese: pa kit tian
Common Name: morinda root
Distribution: Quangdong, Quangxi, Fujian
Properties (characteristics) acrid sweet and warm
Channels (meridians) entered: kidney and liver channels
Actions & Indications: used as tonic for kidneys, improving yang, especially for shenyangxu (kidney yang deficiency) that causes impotence, infertility, premature ejaculation, frequent urination, incontinence, irregular menses, cold and painful lower abdomen and chronic inflammation of nerves (especially the sciatica nerves). Used for muscular atrophy, ridding of damp cold.
Dosage: 4 ~ 10 grams
Chemical ingredients: morindin, vitamin C,asperuloside tetraacetate, resin, monotrpein, methyl isoalizarin, methylisoalizarin 1-methylether, rubiadian, rubiadin-1-methyl-ether, 2-methylanthraquinone, 2-hydroxy-3- (hydroxymethyl)-anthraquinone, 1-hydroxy, antraquinone, anthraquinone, 1,6-dihydroxy-2-methoxy-anthraquinone, 1-hydroxy-2-methoxyanthraquinone; elements: lead, iron, magenese, zinc, potassium, calcium, magnesium, nickel , barium, sodium, phosphorus, aluminium, etc. Organic acid: 24-ethycholesterol, non-adecane, glucose,  and mannose.
Modern Research: ba ji tian extract can be used to counter act the adverse effect of hydrocortisone on the atrophy of thymus gland, and adrenal cortex, and the increase level of SGPT.
Cautions: Contra-indication for damp heat or heat caused by yin deficiency. Use caution in patients with difficulty in urination but usually shenyangxu patients have tendency to develop enlargement of prostate.

3. Some old literatures mentioned not to use it with dan shen  丹 參(Radix salivae miltiorrhizae).
